Will my vehicle pass its MOT if the EML (engine management light) is illuminated?

If the light remains on once the engine is started, it is classed as a major fault under the new MOT rules.

This does not apply to petrol vehicles registered before 1 July 2003 and diesel vehicles registered before 1 July 2008.

There are many different reasons why the engine light might be on. If your light is on (red or amber) or flashing, we recommend booking your vehicle in for a diagnostic assessment. Unlike other warning lights, the engine management light doesn’t alert you to a specific fault.

Should I drive with the EML (engine management light) on?

It is not recommended to continue driving with the engine light on if the vehicle has not been checked by a garage. As the engine management light does not alert you to a specific fault, it is impossible to know whether it is safe to drive until it has been assessed.

However, unless there are any drivability symptoms, your can continue to driving to your destination.
