Do Electric Vehicles need an MOT?

Yes. Electric vehicles require MOTs every year after 3 years, just like petrol and diesel engines. However, the test is slightly different in that Electric vehicles do not require an emissions test. This part of the test was designed to help reduce air pollution but since this is not an issue with electric vehicles, they are not subject to this check.

MOTs are required to ensure the car is in a safe and roadworthy condition according to guidelines set out by government legislation. Therefore, standard checks on a normal car should be performed on an electric car.

This includes things like:

  • Checking all lights operate
  • Checking seatbelts work for safety
  • Checking steering functions properly
  • Checking brake discs and pads for wear
  • Checking for excessive corrosion to portions of the vehicle
  • Checking the horn works properly
  • Checking the condition of the tyres
  • Checking the windscreen for damage/visibility
