Why is my 2015 Ford Focus ABS Light on ?

A 2015 Ford Focus came into our workshop with the ABS and traction control warning lights illuminated. Here’s how we diagnosed the fault, identified a faulty right rear wheel speed sensor and uncovered a separate wheel alignment issue.

Why Is My 2015 Ford Focus ABS Light On?

Customer Concern

A 2015 Ford Focus arrived at our workshop with the ABS warning light, traction control warning light, and multiple dashboard warning messages illuminated.

The customer reported that the warnings had become increasingly frequent, raising concerns about the vehicle’s braking and stability systems.

Diagnosis and Findings

We began with a structured diagnostic assessment to identify the root cause rather than replacing parts based on fault codes alone.

The first step was to carry out a road test, during which we successfully replicated the customer’s concern. While driving the vehicle, we also noted that the steering wheel was off-centre despite the vehicle travelling in a straight line.

Further investigation focused on the right rear wheel speed sensor circuit.

After clearing the fault codes and monitoring live data during testing, it became clear that the right rear wheel speed sensor was not providing a speed signal to the ABS control module.

To confirm the diagnosis, the suspected sensor was swapped with a known good sensor. The fault immediately moved with the sensor, conclusively proving that the wheel speed sensor itself was faulty rather than the wiring or the ABS control module.

The steering wheel position sensor fault was also investigated as part of our diagnostic process.

During the road test, the steering wheel was found to be off-centre while the vehicle was travelling in a straight line. This was likely to have contributed to the steering wheel position sensor fault, and a four-wheel alignment was recommended before carrying out any further investigation into the steering wheel position sensor itself.

Technical Assessment

Based on the diagnostic findings, our recommendation was to replace the faulty right rear ABS wheel speed sensor, carry out a four-wheel alignment to correctly centre the steering wheel, then clear the fault codes and perform a final road test to verify the correct operation of the ABS and traction control systems.

This diagnostic process confirmed that the wheel speed sensor was the source of the ABS fault, while also identifying an alignment issue that required attention before investigating the steering wheel position sensor further.

Important Information

This is one example of a fault that can cause an ABS warning light, traction control warning, or wheel speed sensor fault on a 2015 Ford Focus.

Similar symptoms can also be caused by damaged wiring, reluctor ring faults, wheel bearing issues, steering angle sensor calibration, ABS module faults, or other braking system concerns.

Every vehicle should be diagnosed individually to determine the root cause before any repairs are recommended.
